Instructor-Led & Self-Paced

This professional learning event will be led by Facing History staff and also contains portions that are self-paced and delivered virtually. When you register, you will receive instructions for how access and participate in the event.

This event qualifies for Certificate of Completion.

Awarded upon successful completion of the course for 6 professional development hours. Requirements for professional development hours vary by state. It is the educator's responsibility to ensure that they are meeting the requirements of their state.

This online mini-course is designed to give middle and high school educators the tools and practices to explore critical questions regarding text selection in the English language arts (ELA) classroom. Participants will engage in self-reflection, explore Facing History resources, and be in conversation with other educators as they consider text selection for classroom use. This mini-course includes both self-guided work and facilitated live Zoom sessions. View the full schedule below.

Objectives
Educators will:

  • Explore their core beliefs about teaching and learning and consider how their own identities and  past experiences as ELA students might shape their pedagogy and curricular decisions.  
  • Examine how knowing their students as unique individuals, as well as understanding their relationship to reading and writing, can help them support their students intellectually and emotionally. 
  • Reflect on their course as a whole and on particular texts that can address an opportunity, challenge, need, or new direction they would like to pursue with their students.

Module 1: Start With Yourself (asynchronous, about 1 hr to complete): Mar 2–9

Module 2: Consider Your Students (asynchronous, about 1.5 hr to complete): Mar 10–16

Live Session 1, Thursday, Mar 16, 7–8:00 PM ET (see in your time zone)

Module 3: Avenues for Text Selection (asynchronous, about 1 hr to complete) Mar 17–23

Module 4: Choosing a Text (asynchronous, about 30 min. to complete) Mar 24–30

Live Session 2, Thursday, Mar 30, 7–8:00 PM ET (see in your time zone)

 

Mini-Course At-a-Glance Details

Who should take this mini-course: 6th–12th grade English language arts and humanities  teachers, school leaders, and curriculum specialists. We invite educators from a variety of school settings including public, private, independent, and religious schools to apply. 

Cost: Free. The registration and event fees for this online offering have been waived thanks to generous funding from Facing History and Ourselves donors and supporters.

Duration: 4 weeks. There is a new module each week and the mini-course includes two live Zoom sessions.
