New York Election Day Workshop: The Fragility of Democracy

Join Facing History and the New-York Historical Society in person for an exploration of how individuals and institutions work to maintain and expand access to civil rights and democratic freedoms. Reflect on, what lessons does history offer on what’s needed to strengthen and sustain democracy today? Among the historical moments we will explore are the collapse of the Weimar Republic in Germany, and the Reconstruction Era in the United States. This event will be hosted in person.

Civic Education

As many of us exercise our voting rights on election day, it’s important to reflect on moments in history where we see both the strength and fragility of democracy. Join Facing History and the New-York Historical Society for an exploration of how individuals and institutions work to maintain and expand access to civil rights and democratic freedoms. Among the historical moments, we will explore are the collapse of the Weimar Republic in Germany, and the Reconstruction Era in the United States.

We will examine how nations expand their commitment to democratic rights in the aftermath of war and economic dislocation, and how the backlash from those filled with resentment and fear of ”the other'' derailed democracy and led to the rise of Fascism in Europe and the Jim Crow Era in the United States. What lessons can we learn from history to inform us on what’s needed to strengthen and sustain democracy today?

Participants receive 5.5 CTLE hours.

This event will be hosted in person at the New-York Historical Society.

Address: 170 Central Park West, New York, NY 10024
