Our single professional learning sessions are designed to easily fit into your day. Typically one hour or less, these sessions explore timely and relevant topics including teaching strategies, current events, and more.

Instructor-Led

This professional learning event will be led by Facing History staff. When you register, you will receive instructions for how to attend the event.

This event qualifies for ISBE (Illinois).

Up to 6 clock hours (CPDU's) for Illinois-certified educators will be offered for full participation.

Learn strategies for establishing respectful and safe learning environments for engaging with sensitive content
Explore middle school-appropriate primary sources, including historical documents, documentary footage, and first-person narratives that will engage students intellectually and emotionally
Discover new teaching strategies and classroom activities, including questioning and discussion techniques and support for argumentative writing assignments, that will help you incorporate literature into social studies units or as stand-alone English-Language Arts unit

This workshop introduces Facing History's interdisciplinary framework for teaching the Holocaust through literature. In this workshop, we will examine ways to integrate primary source documents with different Holocaust memoirs appropriate for 7th & 8th grade students that help us dig into fundamental questions of human behavior. By exploring the range of choices in the Nazi regime that led to the persecution of millions of Jews and other targeted groups, we can help students consider how this history can help inform our choices and responsibilities today.

Explore teaching resources about Jewish partisans and resistance during the Holocaust with the Jewish Partisan Educational Foundation and Facing History

The Molotava Brigade was a partisan group made up mostly of escaped Soviet Army POWs. The woman pictured is Faye Schulman, a Jewish woman who fled into the Naliboki forest with her camera equipment and joined the Molotova Brigade. For two years in the forest she photographed the partisan's activities, worked as medical aid and participated in the partisans raid's.
